Can Dehydration Be a Symptom of Diabetes?

People with diabetes may often experience dehydration. Extreme thirst is one of the major symptoms of dehydration. It can even act as an early sign of high blood sugar or glucose in undiagnosed cases.

Diabetes can make individuals prone to dehydration. The kidneys usually reabsorb blood sugar, however, if their levels are too high, the kidneys can′t keep up, and sugar passes into the urine, along with more fluid, making urination more frequent. If diabetic people don′t drink enough water to keep up, fluid is also drawn out of cells, which can further boost dehydration.

The signs of mild dehydration are feeling thirsty, having dry eyes or mouth, being lightheaded, feeling tired, urinating less frequently, and having dark, strong-smelling urine.

When a diabetic individual becomes severely dehydrated, it can make blood sugar spike and lead to life-threatening complications. Severe dehydration can present symptoms such as feeling faint, not urinating, having a rapid heartbeat or respiration or feeling confused.

If severe dehydration remains treated, it may lead to seizures, permanent brain damage, or death.

Since diabetes can be a complex condition, a higher risk of dehydration can act as a complicating factor. In cases of moderate dehydration, slowly drinking water or clear liquids and not exerting the body, staying in the shade or air conditioning is advised. Individuals must look for the aforementioned features to assess their risk of diabetes.
